Chakkara Pongal or Sakkarai Pongal is a delicious sweet dish which is prepared during Pongal festival or Sankranti festival. Sweet Pongal is also known as Chakkara Pongal or Sakkarai Pongal.

Sweet Pongal

Sweet Pongal is a popular rice and moong lentils dish originated from the Indian states such as Tamilnadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Sweet Pongal is prepared during Pongal festival.


Sweet Pongal recipe ingredients 


  • Rice - 100 grams
  • Moong lentils - 80 grams
  • Jaggery - 120 grams
  • Green Cardamoms - 4
  • Ghee - 3 tablespoon
  • Cashews - 10 to 15
  • Raisins - 6 to 10
  • Water - 3 cups





How to make sweet Pongal ?


  • Take a pan or kadhai and roast both the rice and moong lentils on a low flame until they become aromatic. 
  • Rinse both the rice and moong lentils with a couple of times with water.
  • Add both of them in a pressure cooker. Pour water in it. 
  • Pressure cook the rice and moong lentils on medium flame for 3 to 5 whistles.
  • When the pressure from the cooker is down then remove the lid and check the consistency of pongal. If the pongal has a consistency like khichdi then add 1 cup hot water in it and mix it well.
  • Mash the cooked rice and moong lentils. Keep it aside.
  • Now prepare jaggery syrup for pongal. Take 1 cup of water in a pan. Add grated or chopped jaggery in it. 
  • Heat this jaggery solution until it melts completely.



  • Strain the jaggery syrup in the cooked rice and moong lentils mixture.
  • Now add the crushed cardamom. Mix all the ingredients very well.  
  • Pongal will thickens when it cools down. If pongal looks very thick then add 1/3 cup hot water.
  • Heat 3 tablespoon of ghee. Add cashews in it. Saute these cashews until they become light golden.
  • Then add raisins in it. Stir & fry raisins.
  • You can also use Coconut. If you are using coconut then slice it thinly and golden fry it till they turn aromatic. Coconut is optional.
  • Then remove the pan from the stove and mix cashews, raisins and ghee to the pongal mixture.
  • Mix all the ingredients very well. Now, your Sweet Pongal is ready to serve.


Offer this naivedhyam or prasadam to the God and then serve hot or warm delicious sweet pongal to your family members.
