Mattu Pongal is celebrated on the third day of the four-day Pongal festival. In Tamil language, the word 'Mattu' means 'Bull'. Mattu Pongal is the day which is celebrated to pay gratitude to cattle for their hard work. It is particularly celebrated to gratitude the bulls who do hard work in the fields and help farmers to raise the crops.

Mattu Pongal date

It normally falls on the 15th of January and sometimes on 16th of January. This year Mattu Pongal is on 16 February.

Mattu Pongal is the second day of the month of Thai in Tamil Calendar.

Mattu Pongal celebration

On the occasion of Mattu Pongal cattle are given a bath, their horns are painted and decorated with different colors or metal caps. The beautiful garlands are tied around their neck. Turmeric and kumkum are also put on their foreheads. The cattle keeper sprinkle saffron water on their cattle and prayed to protect them and shout the slogan of this festival 'Pongal Pongal'. Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesh are worshipped and the traditional Pongal is offered to both of them during pooja. And then Pongal is served to the cattle.

Pongal Kolam

Kolam is a form of Rangoli which is made by rice paste on the occasion of Pongal.

Mattu Pongal significance

It is the day when bulls, cows and other animals are worshipped. It is a way of saying thank to them for their hard work.

Jallikattu

Jallikattu is a bullfight village sport also known as Manji Virattu. Jallikattu sport is held in the evening of the Mattu Pongal day. This bullfight is held in the central location of the village. All the villagers gathered in this place to witness the fight. And then prizes are given to the winner bullfighters and bull owners.
