Makar Sankranti is an auspicious Hindu festival which is dedicated to the Hindu deity Surya (Sun). Makar Sankranti is observed every year in the month of January.

It marks the first day when sun transit into Capricorn (Makara Rashi) on its celestial path. It signifies the end of the month with winter solstice. It signifies the arrival of longer days.

Makar Sankranti festival is dedicated to the Hindu deity, Surya. People take a holy dip in the rivers such as Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Kaveri on this day. People from different regions celebrate it in different customs. Some people make various kind of sweets by jaggery, sesame, wheat flour while some celebrate this festival by flying kites.

It is known as Makara Sankranthi in Karnataka, Thai Pongal in Tamilnadu, Uttarayan in Gujarat, Maghi in Punjab & Haryana, Magh Bihu in Assam, Khichdi in UP & Bihar, Poush Sangkranti in West Bengal.
