Chakrata is a hill station located in Dehradun district of Uttarakhand. It is located at an elevation of 2,118 metres. Chakrata is situated between the rivers Tons and Yamuna and located at a distance of 98 km from Dehradun.

Chakrata Uttarakhand

Chakrata is located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. It is a perfect location for skiing and trekking. This place was developed by the executives of East India Company. One can also enjoy bird watching here.

History of Chakrata

The area of Chakrata is also known as Jaunsar-Bawar. John Forest discovered the Rock edict of  Ashoka in the year 1860 at Kalsi which is a town located in Chakrata. Colonel Hume established a cantonment of the British Indian Army at Chakrata in the year 1866.

Tiger Falls Chakrata

Tiger Falls is located 20 km away from Chakrata. There is a 5 km trek route which will take you to Tiger Falls from Chakrata. It is located at an average altitude of 312 feet. It is one of the highest direct waterfalls of India. 

Tiger falls is surrounded by Rhododendron and Oak trees which further enhances its beauty and this fall is untouched by commercialization. It is considered one of the favourite destinations of trekkers. Visitors can also enjoy a bath below the 50 metres waterfall which converges in a small pond. Tiger Falls is known as Kailu Pachad or Keraao Pachad in regional language.

Lakhamandal Chakrata

Lakhamandal is an ancient Hindu temple which is located 35 km away from Chakrata. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and associated with Pandavas of Mahabharat. The temple is built in the North Indian Architectural style. Lakhamandal village is situated on the banks of river Yamuna. This temple is under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Kanasar Chakrata

Kanasar is surrounded by the thick forest of Deodar trees. Kanasar is located at a distance of 25 km from Chakrata on Tuini Road. Kanasar is a perfect picnic spot of Chakrata. Asia's oldest and biggest Deodar tree with 6.35 metres circumference is in Kanasar.

Deoban Chakrata

Deoban is located at an average altitude of  2,900 metres. It offers an enchanting view of the majestic Himalayas. Vyas Shikhar is the highest peak of Deoban from where visitors can witness the majestic view of Himalayan peaks. Deoban region is a reserve forest which is surrounded by dense forests of Deodar trees. Deoban region has a wide variety range of Flora & Fauna. Deoban is one of the perfect destinations for watching different species of birds. Deoban also offers a peaceful environment where visitors can spend some quality time close to nature. 

Massu Devta Temple (Manjhgaon) Chakrata

Manjhgaon is an ancient Hindu temple which is located at a distance of 15 km from Chakrata. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Manjhgaon temple is popular as Massu Devta Temple among the locals of Chakrata.

Mundali Chakrata

Mundali is located at a distance of 36 km from Chakrata. It is popular for panoramic Himalayan views and skiing in the winter season. It provides skiing at an altitude of 2,776 metres. Mundali is surrounded by lush green forests. Visitors can enjoy the splendid views of the Himalayas from Mundali.

Chilmiri Chakrata

Chilmiri is popular as a Sunset point of Chakrata. One can witness a fantastic view of the sunset from Chilmiri. It is located 4 km away from Chakrata. Chilmiri is surrounded by lush green forests of Deodar trees. 

Chilmiri Neck Chakrata

Chilmiri Neck is the highest peak of Chakrata which offers spectacular views of Himalayas. Some peaks like Bandarpoonch, Rohini are easily visible from Chilmiri Neck. This place is also popular for watching various birds and colourful butterflies.

Mahasu Devta Temple, Hanol Chakrata

Mahasu Devta Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Mahasu Devta who is the chief deity of local peoples of Hanol and nearby villages. This temple was built in the 9th century. It was constructed in Huna Architectural Style. Hanol is located at a distance of 94 km from Chakrata. The temple is under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). It is located at an average altitude of 1,050 metres above sea level. The major festivals which are celebrated in Mahasu Devta temple are - Bissu, Holi, Diwali, Paush ki Dhaal and Basant Panchami.

Chakrata in Monsoons

The roads may be blocked due to landslides but the beauty of nature is worth-seeing at Chakrata during monsoon season. Monsoon months stay from the month of July till September at Chakrata.
